Step 3: Distribution via the Network (Streaming)

Once compressed, television channels are pushed to distribution servers (CDN - Content Delivery Network). These servers are geographically distributed. For example, for our Swiss clients, we use servers in central Europe to guarantee a near-zero response time (Ping).

When you turn on your IPTV application, it communicates with the middleware (the central management software). The middleware verifies your subscription and grants you access. You select TF1 or RTS 1, and the server begins to send you the video stream, in the form of IP "data packets", continuously. This is called Unicast or Multicast.

Why is there sometimes a slight delay compared to my neighbor who has satellite?

This is completely normal. The encoding step (video compression), transmission over the global internet network, and especially the "buffer memory" (Buffer) of your application take time. Your application voluntarily stores a few seconds of video in advance. Thus, if your Wi-Fi has a 2-second micro-cut, the image will not skip on your screen. This delay generally varies from 10 to 45 seconds compared to the true live broadcast from the stadium.

What is the famous "M3U" link?

An M3U file is simply a text file (a playlist) that contains the list of all the channels. For each channel, there is its name, the link to the logo, and above all the URL (the web address) of the server on which the video stream of this channel is broadcast.

Does IPTV use a lot of "data" (internet data)?
